IMS powers 'Drive Smart' programme as telematics solution partner for Motability Operations in groundbreaking initiative

IMS is delighted to announce its role as the telematics solution partner behind the Motability Scheme’s Drive Smart programme in the UK.

Building on its award-winning smartphone telematics technologies – IMS One App™ and IMS Wedge™ – IMS will power the Drive Smart system, to promote and reward safer, mindful driving amongst scheme customers. Drive Smart is a telematics-based initiative for customers on the Motability Scheme, with a driver under 30 on their lease.
The system combines a smartphone app paired with a discreet Bluetooth beacon, the IMS Wedge, to monitor key driving habits such as speed, braking, cornering, acceleration, and mobile-phone distraction.

Rising motoring and insurance costs, driven by inflation and other supply-chain pressures, continue to affect the affordability of vehicle leasing.

As the Scheme evolves for the future, Drive Smart will play an important role in helping manage insurance costs down for disabled people. By encouraging safer driving and reducing accident risk, the Drive Smart technology will help support lower claims and indemnity costs.
This will strengthen the Scheme’s long-term sustainability and ensuring it remains accessible to those who depend on it.

Paul Stacy, CEO at IMS, said:
“We are thrilled to support Motability in launching Drive Smart. By leveraging our proven IMS One App and IMS Wedge smartphone telematics framework, we are confident this initiative will foster safer driving behaviours among the scheme’s younger and less experienced drivers while delivering a seamless and rewarding digital experience for all that participate.”

Andy Broadfield, Managing Director of Electric & Insurance at Motability Operations, commented: “The Scheme is vital to disabled people’s independence, and our priority is keeping it affordable and reliable as it evolves. Drive Smart is a practical step in that direction, giving customers helpful insights that can support safer journeys and contribute to managing insurance costs.
Partnering with IMS provides us with a proven and flexible telematics solution that aligns with our goals of enhancing safety, sustainability, and customer experience across the Motability Scheme, while helping us manage rising insurance pressures.”

About Motability Operations

We are Motability Operations. We run the Motability Scheme, which gives disabled people a lifeline, connecting them to life-changing independence and freedom.

Through the Scheme, disabled people receiving a qualifying disability allowance can choose to exchange their allowance for a good value, accessible vehicle lease.

We play an essential role in supporting disabled people with accessing work, healthcare, education and training, keeping them connected and improving their chances of getting a job and staying in the workforce.

On average, Scheme users are able to work an additional two days per week and for every £1 of disabled people’s allowances spent on the Scheme, there is £1.50 of benefit for the UK’s economy, including supporting 34,000 jobs across the UK.

We negotiate with manufacturers and partners to provide users of the Scheme with affordability and choice. On average, the Scheme is cheaper than alternative options, and includes insurance, breakdown, tyres and servicing.
